The History Of The Ford Torino

The Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford Torino to North America in 1968. At the time of the introduction the Torino was released as an upscale version of the Ford Fairlane. The Ford Fairlane was on the market in 1955 through 1970. During the first years of production, the Torino was considered an upscale Fairlane the two cars shared several similarities. They both offered 2 door, 4 door and station wagon models. Between 1968 and 1969 the Torino series offered the 2 door hardtop, the 4 door sedan, the Squire station wagon and the sporty version called the Torino GT. The GT version were available in Sportsroof, convertible and the 2 door hardtop.
The Torino Talladega was introduced in 1969 as a Nascar inspired model. This model was limited edition and made specifically for Nascar racing. The Talladega is said to have greatly improved the success rate of the Nascar track.
Starting in 1970 the Torino became the primary model making Fairlane as the sub-series. Another top performance sports model was introduced, the Torino Cobra. The Torino Brougham model was introduced as a luxury model. From 1972 through 1976 the Torino was completely redesigned and renamed as the Gran Torino.
